Sintela Ltd, a global leader in distributed fiber optic sensing, is participating in independent, non-profit energy R&D institute EPRI's Grid-Enhancing Technologies for a Smart Energy Transition (GET SET) initiative. This program unites innovative technology providers to accelerate deployment of solutions that increase grid capacity, improve resilience, and support a sustainable energy future.
The GET SET initiative
The power sector today faces critical challenges such as aging infrastructure, rising electricity demand, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. The GET SET initiative addresses these issues by testing and validating emerging technologies in real-world conditions, enabling faster adoption of solutions that can provide immediate operational and efficiency benefits.
As part of this effort, Sintela has installed its ONYX™ System at EPRI's Transmission & Distribution Laboratory in Lenox, Mass. The ONYX™ System is being evaluated alongside other Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technologies to assess its potential to enhance grid capacity, reliability, and efficiency.
The ONYX™ System
Sintela's ONYX™ System transforms existing powerline optical fiber infrastructure – including OPGW, OPPC, ADSS, and MASS cables – into a comprehensive asset condition and security monitoring platform. Using patented Industry Application Software powered by AI and machine learning, the system detects, classifies, and accurately locates events such as corona discharge, vibration, and security breaches down to individual tower locations.
"We are excited to support EPRI's research by demonstrating how our ONYX™ System can unlock new value from existing fiber optic cables, enhancing grid monitoring and resilience," said Magnus McEwen-King, CEO of Sintela. "Our technology is already protecting critical infrastructure worldwide, and this collaboration highlights its growing impact in the power sector."
Justin Bell, technical lead and research physicist at EPRI's Lenox Laboratory, added: "The GET SET initiative provides a rigorous, objective platform for utilities and regulators to evaluate grid-enhancing technologies like DLR. Our Lenox test facility offers valuable insights into how these solutions perform under varied conditions."
Sintela's monitoring systems are used globally by power utilities to detect operational issues and security threats, including perimeter intrusion and equipment damage, while supporting compliance with regulations. By helping utilities gain real-time operational data, Sintela enables safer, more efficient, and higher-capacity power networks.
